The history of the Platán Manor is intertwined with the Esterházy family. Standing by the Old lake, the two-towered, roof-decked Esterházy mansion and its "small castle" took their present form in 1776. The buildings, which were damaged during the 20th century, found a caring owner with the Platán team: the renovation resulted in the complex receiving the Hungarian Property Development Award in 2012.
The giant sycamore tree, our eponym (Platán means sycamore tree in Hungarian), was brought here from Versailles in 1785. In 2014, it was the Tree of the Year; we are the one who take care of it and cherish it with love.

About us
Tata, a field town and the surrounding villages that had fallen into ruin under Turkish rule, was bought by János Esterházy in 1727. By the beginning of the 19th century, thanks to the work of settlers, monks, renowned architects and engineers were invited to Tata by the count's family, Tata had developed into the administrative centre of the manor and one of the most beautiful Baroque-style towns in the county.
In the early 1760s, Miklós Esterházy commissioned the young Jakab Fellner to design a grandiose new castle to be built on the site of the 14th century Zsigmond Castle. Due to the death of the Count and the high costs, the plan, which had been worked out in several versions, was rejected by his successor, Joseph Esterházy II, who ordered the construction of a more modest estate centre.
The two-towered Esterházy palace with its roof terrace by the Old Lake in Tata and the associated 'small palace' took its present form in 1776. Owned by the count's family until the mid-20th century, the complex has been home to many monarchs, such as Franz Joseph and Sissi, and has been the site of historic events such as the signing of the Schönbrunn Peace Treaty. The facilities of the Platán complex, situated between the castle and the palace, were home to the staff of the count's family.
After the Second World War, the castle complex became state-owned; it was used for decades as a hospital and neurological institute and then stood empty for a long time. The historic buildings of the Platán complex were privately owned and used as a medical clinic and private apartments.
In 2007, Platán, bought the buildings, that were desperate for renovation, in the hope that they could be saved from decay and remain a lovely part of the lakeside landscape in their old-new function for a long time to come.
Platán Restaurant and Guest House then underwent a major refurbishment designed by architect Anikó Markos. The reconstruction of the building and the improvement of the surrounding public space was completed in 2009.
The Platán Restaurant and Várárok Guest House in Tata and its surroundings received the Hungarian Real Estate Development Award in 2012 as the highest professional recognition of the reconstruction of the monument, and the restaurant was put on the culinary map of Hungary, becoming one of the best rural restaurants in Hungary under the management of István Pesti, chef of the two Michelin-starred Platán Gourmet Restaurant.
Platán has always been committed to Tata and its surroundings. Planted at the western gate of the Tata Castle, the sycamore tree, which was brought from Versailles by the Esterházy family in 1785, won the Tree of the Year competition in Hungary in 2014 and came second in the European competition in 2015. The Platán team proudly looks after the tree to this day.
In the area bordered by the Tata moat and the Old Lake, among the centuries-old sycamore trees, stands Platán, a building that was built as an annex to the Esterházy manor house and which has been used as an inn for centuries.
In 2018, the need arose to rethink the functions of the building, and with it to transform and renovate the interiors, for which we asked Zoltán Varró and his team, one of the best-known interior designers in Hungary, winner of the Gold Key Award in New York, to help us.
After six years, the Várárok Guest House has been renewed and is now called Platán Manor. As we mentioned earlier, Platán's facilities were once home to the staff of the Count's family, so the name Platán Manor reflects the history and atmosphere of the place. A quality management system has been implemented to ensure the high quality of our services.
We created 10 rooms and a suite in the Platán Udvarház; on the lower level, below the reception there are three salons with different atmospheres and different functions. These are designed to help our guests relax with an elegance reminiscent of the Esterházy family spirit. Many details resonate with the artistic presentation of István Pesti, while revealing a closeness to nature, with the tones of forests and water.
Modern cosiness and colours are the hallmarks of the Platán Manor. In the Blue Salon, you can feel as if you were a guest of the Esterházy family, relaxing, chatting, drinking tea.
Our other salon is the Madaras Salon with greenish tones, reminiscent of baroque conservatories, where you can sit by the fireplace and enjoy a glass of wine even on a summer evening.
Zoltán Varró has boldly reimagined the hunting room, an essential accessory in a stately home, as the third salon in the Manor. Here, not only the furniture, but also the walls and ceiling are covered by green antique velvet, the mirrors, the antlers hung on the wall and the special moss carpet, designed by Zoltán Varró, evoke the mystery of the woods near Tata.
This carpet is also used in the rooms of the Platán Manor, where the curtains with their forest motifs also evoke a sense of closeness to nature.
"Platán offers a complex experience. The historical past of the city, the closeness to nature and top gastronomy blend into a harmonious whole. At the same time, the atmosphere is naturally underpinned, with the emphasis on István Pesti's cuisine." - says Zoltán Varró.
– mondja Varró Zoltán.
Our fine dining restaurant is connected to the Manor, which awaits guests looking for a refined and sophisticated culinary experience. Here, István Pesti, chef of the two Michelin-starred Platán Gourmet Restaurant together with his team offer a degustation dinner for guests looking for a gourmet delight.
Chef István Pesti's dishes are often referred to as works of art, where taste and spectacle come together in a unique harmony. The clean space evokes the atmosphere of the English Park, planted nearby by the Esterházy family in 1783.
In line with international trends, the surroundings of the moat adjacent to the renovated Platán Manor have also been renewed. Zoltán Varró and his team paid particular attention to the surroundings of the castle – a symbol of the city – when designing the plans approved by the heritage protection authority. Mirror-encased spa cabins were installed alongside the castle wall, which, thanks to the special covering, give the medieval wall a multidimensional look.
To protect the birds of Tata, the mirrors have been decorated with stickers designed by Szabolcs Kókay, one of Hungary’s most renowned nature painters. Illustrations of birds of prey have been placed here.
The designer Zoltán Varró was inspired by the reconstruction of the castles of Malta (Valletta and Mdina), where contemporary parks were created. As in Malta, the aim in Tata was to ensure that the renewed spaces were not only an interesting experience for the users of the gardens, but also for tourists who viewed them from above.
The completed outdoor spa features mirror-encased mobile cabins with saunas, jacuzzi, steam room, plunge pool, massage and relaxation rooms, with greenish interiors evoking the mysterious atmosphere of the hunting room of the Manor House.
The lightweight, floating paths and staircases, inspired by the castle’s internal network, blend into the landscape. The developments also follow nature conservation standards.
